STAGE 1 (DAY 1)

Stage 1

We'll start with the brick wall, 60 bricks (exact amount 44bricks), 1 cement bag and 2 tongs of sand. There are 4 levels, 11 bricks each level.

Stage 1 Cost:

60 bricks = $12

1 cement = $9

2 tongs = $6

Stage 1 Total = $27

STAGE 2 (DAY 2-3)

Stage 2

For this stage, we must have a lot of stuff (whatever stuff to fill in e.g. soil, rocks or extra bricks from stage 1) to make the quarter shape. This way we don't have to waste/spend a lot of cement for the fill.

Stage 2 Estimated Cost:

4 cement = $36

sand = (we'll use sea sand)

Stage 2 Total = $36

[depends highly on the filling]

side note/suggestion: i think its better to buy more bricks and we'll just shape it into a quarter setting. So then, we just pour the cement layer over and shape it nicely. The picture is only a sample. 100 bricks will be alright for filling.

Finally, in this stage, we'll start mounting the rail, add more shape to the quarter and lastly smoothen the concrete surface.

2 cement = $18

5 tongs of sand = $15

FINISH UP 'CLEANING CAMPAIGN'!

i know we did a campaign before but there is a little bit left to do, especially the drain. we need to at least make the drain clear, so water can pass through the bigger drain. we gotta make a trash bin or something. i do realize the skate park isn't getting any cleaner even after 'they' cleaned things up (for the Borneo games).

still not fully planned, but the location is set. we need to check up on when you guys are free, especially for the ones who are working in shifts. in terms of budget? we might at least need $5 per person, maybe.

MAKE A NEW LAUNCHER?

i don't know the details for now, up to you guys. there's man power, tools and some materials. what's missing is a nice blueprint. (materials to make it can be used from the palettes, at least that would cut cost). NO RUSH! relax~

Project: Manual Pad - NEW TOPPING

here's the result of today's repair work.

smooth, ain't it?

it is so much more solid, firm and smooth than the first one which was ruined by the rain. we started from 8.30am to 12.30pm to do the work. took so much time since there was only 2 of us working on it and limited tools. but it was ok since we got so much things done.

the weather was dry and hot through out the morning, thank God~~ it made the plastering so much easier since the layer dries up fast (plus we didn't put a lot of of water in the mix). it did rain at noon but only a little bit, but we already came prepared for the worst case scenario.

i just hope it won't rain heavily tonight or at all and tomorrow would be a hot dry day.

Project: Manual Pad - set back

unfortunately due to the rain that hit us on the night when the plastering was done, it has damaged and distorted the cement mix. and so, it end up with crusty surfaces like biscuits.

to be more specific, the cement was separated from the sand, cement was floating while the sand sank down hence giving the brittle and fragile surface.

anyways, it is a lesson learned. always put weather as a crucial factor that it either can speed up the drying process or it can completely ruin a days work.

if we leave it the way it is now, its definitely going to be ruined. so we're gonna repair it.

and FYI, me and Nas is doing the repair work, so no worries. i really want this to get over with ASAP coz i wanna study... and sk8 too!

I'm really hoping the weather would be good so the repair work and drying would be ok. if the weather continues to be rainy, i'd give it 2-3days. if the weather is hot, then just 24 hours would do, just like the ledge.

as usual, i didn't take any pictures for the finale haha and that means,

THAT'S A WRAP!

although there are little things we need to do like: sweeping the park, remove the excess cement on the ground & scrape off cement on the angle irons. basically just a cleaning campaign.

REMINDER:
DO NOT WAX ANGLE IRONS BEFORE THEY
ARE CLEANED AND GIVEN THE 'MAGIC SPRAY' =P.

hate that i don't post the picture? for today, honestly, i really forgot to take the picture. the real reason why i don't wanna post it because i want YOU guys to go there and see it for yourself and skate it. in the end, we all have fun! make the park alive once again.

it rained at noon, i really thought that it was just gonna be another day of failure but luckily, the day was ok after the short rainfall.

we started off quite late around 4 because we had to take some sand from 'the beach'. that would definitely be the final trip! so relieved now~~ no more "not enough beach sand". after we got that, then the basic routine starts all over again, MIXING!

the pad is pretty much filled up now. the only thing to do is plastering (smooth out the surface with a mixture of fine sand and cement with some plastering tools).

this is gonna take one more day and the pad will be ready (assuming weather is good to let it dry the next day).

not really ruined laa the pad is A OK. it just rained so we can't do a thing. there were not enough sand and people too. so today sucks big time! the rain just started randomly. the are a few liters of water inside the last filling space.

we need to get the job done before the incomplete pad becomes a swimming pool. so anyways, we'll continue tomorrow afternoon again.

another hitch same as last time, we did not have enough beach sand. i really thought we took a lot of it already but it wasn't enough to cover everything yet (so far 2/3 of the pad has been filled).

there are 7 tasks and the first three is the important ones because those are the materials we need for tomorrow. we'll need to work as a team on most of the other tasks after that.

let me tell you that the most agonizing work for tomorrow would be or will be is concrete mixing. its definitely gonna hurt our backs! lol and this is only for filling.

if there are a number of people on site, we can switch roles or divide ourselves into groups. one group is for mixing (getting the mixture ready) and another for doing work on the pad itself. easy? we'll see how it goes.

yes, we are going to start tomorrow but slowly. since im still having my semester break, i might as well use my free time for this but the main problem is men power. what we want is to do a quick and nice job for this project, let's say a maximum of just 2 days? 3 days the most. but the real question is, can it be done that fast with only a few people?

well, anyways, here's what were gonna do for tomorrow:

get angle irons to the warehouse for welding works. (Nas)
get/buy some bricks and fine sand. (Dan)
put beach sand on site. (Kim/Bobby)
do the first layer of bricks.

you guys can come in the afternoon to help and sk8 at the same time!

Project: Manual Pad (Final I)

as you can see, the cost will be $80.

there are still some bricks that Along wanna give away, that means we can cut the cost even lower depending how much we'll be given.

since this is going to be a manual pad, we have decided to incorporate wire mesh into the build because the manual pad is definitely going to be the highly used obstacle. therefore, we need the mesh to strengthen the structure for longer life.

welding works is necessary in order to add in some security feature. this is a sponsored or should i say, donated piece? well, its Nasir's, so we gotta put extra effort to ensure the angle irons are gonna stay there for quite a long time.

Project: Manual Pad (Planning stage)

this is the first draft of the manual pad. its length is slightly shorter than the ledge, about 1feet shorter. why shorter? we're thinking about using a stock angle iron (just one piece) which is about 8 feet long, so i gotta design according to the angle iron's length.

it is less than 1 feet high but it'll be much wider than the ledge. by utilizing the length of the bricks, i try to avoid the amount of bricks needed to be broken and so that's why the pad will be extra wider (isn't that good?? :p).

materials needed for current design:

80 bricks (68 bricks to be exact)
2 bags of cement ($18 = 2 x $9)
2 tongs of fine sand for brick work ($8 = 2 x $4)
lots of sea sand for filling
2 tongs of fine sand for plastering ($8 = 2 x $4)

TOTAL $80,000
(just kidding lol)

$34 of fine sand and cement
excluding cost of bricks

i maybe overestimating the number of sand to be used but from the previous project, we find that we are always lacking in sand, i think its better to have a little extra in that.

btw, sorry, i could not go for the discussion just now, this is what i wanted to tell you guys actually.

summary of construction project:

total time of completion: 4 construction days (approx. 32 hours)

day 1 - brick work (3 layers)

day 2 - brick work (top + inner layers) + filling + applying angle irons

day 3 - filling

day 4 - plastering

materials used:

7 tongs of fine sand + lots of beach sand
2 1/2 bags of cement
100+ bricks (i've lost count!)

there were only 4 of us and finishing off the fill was quite a task, we needed more sand, so we went to 'the' beach (guess where? lol) took quite a lot of sand til my car turned into a midget!. luckily, that one trip was enough to fill the top.

for now, we need to give it time to harden because we can't rush to do the plastering. we'll be doing it tomorrow morning (Thursday, 26 February 2009) and after that, everything will be done. not to forget, cleaning the park too!

Day 2

an incredibly challenging task done by only 7 people, thanks guys...and yeah, we did really well! you can't really imagine the amount of progress we've made in this second day of construction. team work was so crucial, that most of what we did was carefully coordinated and yes, we slack as a team too haha that's because the day was damn hot and there was no shades, not like the other day.

once again, big thanks to Samsul for the tutorials on masonry and doing the work too lol. we (those who seriously wants this to happen) really appreciate your help, you deserve a big graffiti space on that ledge haha. Not forgetting about another person, thanks to Along for sponsoring more bricks on the project, we really appreciate your help too bro.

it is really taking shape. i'm not going to put up a lot of pictures for this post, if you wanna know whats inside the ledge, you'll have to find that out for yourself LoL or stay tuned to this blog or join to help us finish the remaining work to be done, which are: filling and plastering. (owh, what's that? you saw the bricks inside the ledge? you think you know, but you have no idea!)

i will update again soon for the next schedule about the third construction day, it is most likely on this coming Wednesday and the project will most definitely be done with by then (assuming there are other people who wants to join and contribute something for the love of this sport.)

Day 1

first half of work done

first layer of bricks have completely cemented but for the second layer, only partial or one-fifth was cemented.

this is what we have been able to do for the first half of the day due to major draw backs (lets say the sand was not the kind that we have expected from that area). so it took some time to get the materials and even tools needed to start cementing. thanks to Samsul for guiding us through the cementing process and doing the cementing too! honestly, i learned a lot and without him i don't think we would get that far for the first half.

second half of work done

first, second and third layer has been cemented. angle iron is well fit for the finishing touches on the next construction day.

we started as soon as possible after the short break. we replicated what was done in the first half and just continued along til 5pm. we stopped till the last of the 3rd layer was done. angle iron's security feature seems very promising. the rain has got me worried about the structure at the moment. anyways, i must not think about that, what's important now is the materials we need to fill in it for the next construction day.

CONSTRUCTION DAY 2

for fill - bricks/broken bricks and good size stones/pebbles
usual stuff - cement/water/sand.

TASKS:

make inner brick layers (maybe done tomorrow)

final fill.

here's the second version

just some minor tweaks on the wood. instead of using a 2" x 1" plank, i removed it and just use 3 planks of the same dimensions (8" x 1"s).

i am more confident on this change because if we pour the cement on the top, there should not be leakages going down (if there is, only minute amount) plus i think the whole structure looks more durable for the long run. by the way, the wood is kayu meranti. its very tough and strong.

the 2 layers of bricks below the planks are hollow, no cement inside it.

this is the design i have managed to come up with, it is better than my initial designs because some of them were not very efficient, as in they use too much materials and it must be damn expensive to build.

i hope with this design we can work on this project with sufficient materials and a good worth amount of money.

there you go, we need:

84 individual standard bricks,
few planks of wood at certain specific measurements,
cement, and
sand

the reason why i incorporated wood in the design its because we can't afford to spend a lot on bags of cement as they are the ones that costs the most. so the wood helps to cut down the amount of cement to be used.

i have yet to see the bricks for myself to finalize everything including the real dimensions.

i will be updating different version of this design. thats it for now.

Design: Box #1 [UPDATE II]

it does look kinda small, but that's how it is for a 6ft long. when it is complete it should be 1+ deck high and the box frame will allow us to put more stuff under it to make it higher. Assuming that we're going use the 12ft planks of wood. one plank of 12ft wood would cost about $10 to $11, cost depends on the type of wood we choose.

the different colors shows the number of planks needed so, the red and blue color consists of 2 planks of 12ft. about the yellow, ermm... its a an overestimate, but i got that covered hehe. the center bars can be replaced by a thinner wood but strong enough to support the stress. lets say we're going to change the center bars with a different wood, then the cost would be different.

all in all, the cost of the box will definitely reach up to $20+ (excluding nails and other things), i think this should be cheap and small enough to be managed.

The green colored sections are the ones that we're able to obtain, the purple part is the one that we need to do more thinking and decide about.

I'm gonna include the full dimensions of the box on the next update.

By the way, the carpenter is kind enough to cut the meranti into half, hopefully he'll be able to cut the spaces for the center bar too.

Just came up with this design, it should be much cheaper since wooden materials can be found easily. Metal copings can be added. Just a regular manual pad. Hopefully, we all can collect the materials needed and collect some money for the necessaries.

waddup guys!? the Film Team has been around a few years back with a bunch of the original skaters. A little history of the Film Team. It was formed back in 2004 with the first batch whom are Ejat, Apis and Hakim. Now, a few years had gone by and another new batch has been formed that consists of Izzat, Ejud, Malul and Danial by the year 2008. As we all live in and near the capital, we represent the Brunei-Muara district.
