About
What We Do
Skatedium is Brunei's online skateboarding magazine loaded with locally produced skate videos and photos. We showcase local skaters, skate shops, skate parks, skate spots and other entities or individuals who are involved in the extreme sports scene. We also bring you regional and global skateboarding news.
Skatedium 'Before'
Skatedium was initially a project-driven group which we designed and constructed skate obstacles with the help of passionate extreme athletes and skate shop owners by supporting us be it financially or labour (we can't thank you enough!) The projects we did defined us. Projects ranges from cemented structures to wooden and metallic types which you can browse here. (PS: unfortunately, not all projects were documented)
Since the Youth Park has been developed, by the Ministry of Culture, Youth & Sports, there is LESS need to pursue on conflicting projects. We are very thankful to His Majesty the Sultan of Brunei, the Ministry and BSA (Brunei Skateboard Association) for their initiative and effort in its development.
The Name/Brand
By the time we have completed 2 projects (Project Ledge and Manual Pad), the skate park was just still the 'stadium skate park', so in order to market and promote the place, we came up with 'Skatedium'. To put things simply, Skatedium is the merge of the words 'Skate' and 'Stadium'. We wanted to make something similar to The Berrics, something short, simple and marketable. We believe we have done a good job of branding the place since the youths are still calling the Youth Park, 'Skatedium', we truly take that as a compliment.
Our Contribution
The period from 2000 to 2008, the skateboarding scene in Brunei-Muara district was an 'on and off' thing. There were plenty of skate shops in the early 2000's but they didn't last very long and we think that the problem is the demand for skateboard products was not sustainable or growing because we did not have the right things to skate.
We did have a skate park back then, but it was equipped with wooden obstacles that has a really short life when left exposed to the tropical weather here in Brunei. We did have discussions about wood vs cement designs and decided to go full on with cement for its longevity - it was the best decision ever. The ledge and manual pad stayed for almost 4 years (2009 - 2012) until the Youth Park had to be developed.
By making weather-resistant obstacles and promoting the place, we believe we were able to bring the skateboarding scene back to life. New skateboard enthusiasts came to learn, people from other districts came to skate and competitions were held in Brunei-Muara again.
It was a remarkable journey and we could not have done it without the support from the community who believed in us.
Skatedium 'Now'
We no longer (and do not intend to) attach the brand, Skatedium, to the completed Youth Park and have transitioned towards developing the skateboard scene by pushing more local skate content to the public with the goal of promoting the sport. Hence, the implementation of online magazine model.
